Since their introduction to the public over two decades ago ATV's have become a household name filled with fun and excitement. In the beginning these vehicles were only used by hard core motorcycle enthusiasts. Times have changed and now approximately 1 out of 5 households owns one. Although they are much safer than the traditional 2 wheel dirt bike they can still be very dangerous. It's vitally important that parents do everything they can to ensure the safety of themselves as well as their children.
To operate an ATV safely you need to be strong, skilled, and most importantly mature. It's advised that children under the age of 16 do not operate these vehicles alone. Remember that you have to have a significant amount of strength to be a passenger as well. It's well advised that anyone under the age of 6 should not ride even as a passenger.
It's no surprise that head injuries are the number one cause of serious injuries and even death. You should never operate an ATV without a helmet. ATV's are also used for towing people in the winter months on sleds or tubes. The persons who are being towed must also wear head protection in case they are dislodged from the trailing vehicle.
Before you head out for your next adventure make sure to fill your ATV completely full. There is nothing worse than running out of gas 10 miles from home at dusk. With that in mind always take a cell phone when you use your ATV. The truth of the matter is accidents happen and when they do the faster you can get help the better off you are. If you are taking your ATV to a different location make sure that you use the proper ramps or lifting methods when loading and unloading your ATV.
Before you head out on your next big ATV venture make sure you check the weather forecast. It's probably not the best idea to venture into the wilderness if a major storm is brewing. Also make sure you do a thorough inspection of the trails before you go all out. In the winter always avoid ATVing on ice unless you are 100% certain the ice is strong enough to hold you and you ATV.
